„Seeing Containers“ are multifunctional and more than just a means of transport for container ships, road, and rail.
They can be used for transportation, stowage, storage, living, and working.
In this case, artists use the containers for exhibitions and performances. The result is a modern, modular type of exhibition. Openness and interactivity are the primary governing principles.
The mobile, temporary gallery (consisting of 4 accessible art containers) will be standing in a central location at each of the participating towns, and will be open to visitors.
For their “Seeing Containers”, Andrea Freiberg and Silke Krah have worked out a concept named “NEW LAND”. The artists cast a waxen ground relief (5 cm in height) from ca. 800 litres of paraffin and gathered candles.
True to the sense of the word, “new land” is being created and entered. The soft material can be walked on and re-shaped. Visitors can draw, carve, or whittle the surface of the way relief or modify it with the warmth of their bodies.
“New land” thereby creates a pictoral platform for communication, similar to school tables, tree barks, and toilet walls – fleeting and yet enduring. The relief becomes the image carrier for a landscape of individual signets, traces of actions, writings, symbols and imprints.
The dialog between materials, tools, gestures, and identities enables each participant to make contact with the others. The work being done, and the changes to the wax relief, will be documented visually and in writing.
