Secret society, assemblage, 2018
The starting point is an almost 100-year-old group photo from an estate in the Siegen area. The recognizability of the place or even a person recedes completely into the background. In addition to the found photograph, other found objects are included in the work - linen-covered laundry buttons. Decades ago found in almost every household, because the bed linen was held together by these buttons. Due to e.g. the procedure of boiling laundry, one or the other button often broke and had to be replaced quickly. The old linen buttons, an attic find from a household clearance, classically sewn on with twine right in the photo, cover the faces of a group of women. The use of the buttons, circular, with cream and white color scheme, centered two openings with stabilizing metal edges, unify the people and weld them even more tightly together. The two openings within a button reduce the facial expressions to a fixed gaze with supposedly wide open, large eyes. A group of female persons who now belong together even more in a mysterious way and will not reveal the secret, making them an intimate community, a "secret society". Only a sewn-on button, which unlike the other buttons has been fastened with a red thread, gives a vague hint that this person claims a special position in the group.
The artistic treatment of the photograph opens up new perspectives and points of view, which the viewer can search for and fill in himself.
